Many a times I have emphasized that People & Organization are two sides of the same Coin. An Organization and its Brand is built around its Own People first and everything else next. A fond follower of Japanese Philosophies, its heartening to know that, if a company is in to Consumer Products for example, its important that the Employees of the Company are its first customers and it should be out of pride and not by force. This will ensure belongingness and trust in what an Organization and its People are expected to do, and the principles they stand together for.

I still remember the LPG Era with awe – Liberalization, Privatization & Globalization. Thanks to the then Government for changing the Behavioral Landscape of both Buyers and Sellers. Opening up of Indian Economy exposed Indian Consumers to multiple choices of Global Products, from otherwise compromised buying out of limited choices. Thanks to Maruti Suzuki, Japanese were amongst the earliest to take advantage of the situation.
Indian Brands in Consumer Durables segment paved way for much better Japanese products, not just because of Brand Preference. Process Leadership of Indian Companies gave way to the perceived Product Leadership by becoming licensed manufacturers or collaborators. This brought in Japanese Culture into Indian Organizations. It was early days in my career where “Company Uniforms” for executives was unheard of. Career Growth helped me understand the significance of wearing a Company Uniform with Pride and Belongingness, which I later adopted for the Organizations I lead, either formally or informally. And it also dawned on me that this is how a Brand is Built & Promoted – by Employees first and then all others next.

I did also notice, especially in consumer durables segment, Employees are encouraged to buy only own products and certainly discouraged from buying a Competitor’s product, irrespective of market standing. This does really make a case for What You Make is What You Get.

EVOLUTION:

SPELT Environment (Socio-Political-Economic-Legal-Technology) evolved alongside Market evolution. Concepts of TQM and QFD were liberally used in bringing together the stake holders for Mutual Good. Education system and Employee Patterns shifted along with Generational Shift & Demographic Changes. Supervision gave way to Facilitation and Managing gave way to Leading. 80:20 rule came to be realized – 20% of People work for future (5 Year Plans), while 80% work for the present (2 Years).

MANAGERS AND LEADERS:

As a widely travelled Intrapreneur, it makes me wonder the way Indian Organizations are structured. Probably it is more to do with societal expectations than those of Organizations. While the Global Organizations appear to be more flat, Majority of Indian Organizations continue to remain highly vertical. Exception can be in Services Sector. This could be either because of Indian Organizations still growing or to meet Career aspirations of Employees – who anticipate promotions periodically. Personally, I see this challenging. Money is not a problem but change in hierarchy is, unless there is scope for additional responsibility. Statistics puts this at 10% of total work force who can be considered for promotion, limitation being Organizational Growth. A certain percentage of retirement and recruitment is also essential for the Organizational upheaval.

I have also noticed, elsewhere in the World, except for HR Professionals, very rarely in other functions People Manage People. Functional and Process Management is clearly distinguished from People Management. There has to be a unique distinction in roles for People to become Managers, especially when the structure is flat. However in Indian Scenario, Managers in Hard Core functions (other than service functions) major responsibility is People Performance. And that is meant to Maintain Value.

Leaders, who are expected to Add Value, will look mostly the Progress and therefore Induce Change & Manage it for the Betterment.

LEADING FROM THE FRONT:

Management Styles will largely depend on the Nature of Business, Employee Demography and Organizational Life Cycle. Traditional Organizations which has more of Doers than Planners and Employee Educational Levels low to moderate, will call for Leaders who take responsibilities and

Lead from the Front, mostly assisting & supporting people perform. Its more of Task Based Leadership wherein Employees are expected to meet their DRM obligations. Such Organizations will also be highly verticalised, rely on Procedures and have a great deal of Role Clarity. Very common wherever Manufacturing is involved.

LEADING FROM BEHIND:

Demography induced Generational Shifts have paved way for Modern Organizations. Employee Education Levels are superior to that of Traditional Industries. Role of Managers are that of Facilitators, as commonly practiced elsewhere in the World. Majority of such organizations have stringent recruitment procedures and are generally flat in structure – as seen in Services Industry. Leaders in such Organizations rarely involve in DRMs, except for that of structured reviews and dash boards. Role of Leaders then will be on ESG and Growth – the 3Ps – People, Planet and Profits. For such Organizations – Leaders usually work from behind encouraging the team to achieve targets and goals – mostly Problem Solving & Mentoring.

SITUATIONAL LEADERSHIP:

Like Commanders in the War Front, most effective Business Leaders are Adaptive – meaning they appreciate the Circumstances, Accept the need to Change accordingly and Adapt themselves. This is essential in a Dynamic Business World wherein Geo-economics is Multipolar and WTO has become less significant in the era of reverse protectionism.
Once Leadership Adapts themselves to the necessities, sometimes called Predictive Leadership, Leaders understand the need for validation, post which they ensure Organization Wide Adoption of effective changes.

Why part is always clear – What, When, How & How Much determine the Effectiveness of Leadership. Ofcourse, the start is always the Right Understanding of the Why…..

“AI will be the best or worst thing ever for humanity” – Elon Musk, Techpreneur

The above-mentioned quotable quote pretty much sums up the state of affairs that we are in. AI adoption has intensified in all walks of life.  2023 will perhaps go down as the year of ChatGPT. Generative AI (Gen_AI) models led by ChatGPT and including Microsoft Co-pilot, Google Gemini, Llama, Whisper, and Claude, using Large Language Models (LLM), not only became pervasive but also impacted all sectors and endeavors of humankind. Over the last couple of years, we also realized that with growing AI adoption, stronger governance is vital to balance innovation with safeguards on accuracy, accountability, autonomy, bias, ethics, fairness, integrity, morality, privacy, safety, transparency, trust, and sustainability

Various challenges and misuse of AI that we encountered included bias, deep fakes, election interference using AI, copyright infringements, job losses, carbon emissions, misinformation, cyber-attacks, monopolistic practices, and low-quality content.  Biases could be algorithmic, gender, language, and political in nature. AI regulatory frameworks have come to the fore with all governments engaging in said efforts.  Governance of AI technologies has become essential for governments across the world. Over the last decade, 40+ countries have enacted 200+ AI and related legislations while over 90 countries have developed AI governance frameworks, which will eventually translate to legislation. This is a far cry from just one AI legislation in 2016.  These governmental efforts are complemented by supranational agencies such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) agency of the United Nations (UN) & Organization for Economic Cooperation & Development (OECD). High-technology giants such as Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon, Meta, and Apple are also shaping the discourse in terms of AI technologies and its impact.

As we stand today, AI governance, regulation, and policy are, at best, a work-in-progress worldwide.  Due to the rapid pace of evolution of the technology, a well-defined, comprehensive, and end-to-end AI policy framework remains a challenge. The wish list is that this AI governance framework should offer clarity and direction to all stakeholders, while remaining adaptable to the rapid evolution of technology. This investigation explores the various intergovernmental and supranational initiatives like GPAI, AI for Good, UNESCO AI, AI Impact summit, AI safety summit, and Bletchley declaration towards AI governance and regulation.

Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI)

Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) was launched in June 2020 by OECD subsuming earlier discussions on the topic by various nations as early as 2017. India was a founder member of this partnership along with EU and US.  This is a global coordination platform that brings together governments, academia, industry, and civil society to ensure AI is developed in a way that is human-centric, ethical, and trustworthy. Various working groups have been formed centered along various themes such as Responsible AI, Data Governance, Future of Work, and Innovation & Commercialization. These efforts have been complemented by UNESCO as well as G20 & G7, who have factored the GPAI inputs and deliberated on AI in their respective summits and working group discussions.  The focus is on ethics, policy, and responsible AI and not legislation and there are multiple layers of meetings all year around in addition to a global GPAI summit. These policy recommendations are generally non-binding and feed into major summit agendas including recently-held AI impact summit in India.

AI for Good

AI for Good is a similar initiative of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in partnership with 40 UN sister agencies towards AI for society. This global- platform aims to identify practical applications of AI to advance the UN SDG and scale these solutions for global impact. These include AI applications in healthcare, education, disaster management, climate change and smart cities. An AI for Good global summit is conducted annually to add to the narrative to:

• Apply AI to real-world global problems
• Accelerate progress toward SDGs
• Promote ethical and inclusive AI
• Foster global collaboration

UNESCO AI framework

The UNESCO AI framework is another important global effort to guide ethical and human-centric AI development. From 2018, this has been in the works as an extension to UNESCO’s mandate to advance ethics of science and digital transformation. Adopted in November 2021 by 190+ countries, this framework sets standards for how AI should be designed, developed, and used responsibly. This is the first truly global AI ethics agreement focusing on the following areas:

• AI Governance & Regulation
• Data Governance
• Education & Skills
• Gender Equality
• Environmental Impact
• Ethical Impact Assessment

This serves as a reference and ethical guideline for national AI laws and policies and is complementary to GPAI and AI for Good, which focus on policy collaboration and application areas respectively. However, all of them are non-binding and part of a shared universe with multi-stakeholders such as government, UN agencies, Tech giants, civil society, and academia.  Simultaneously, various countries are also working on their own sets of AI governance frameworks and policy. Some of them like US have been following a market-driven Ai regulatory approach. On expected lines, China has a state-driven approach whereas the EU follows a rights-driven approach.

AI safety summit

The AI safety summit hosted by the United Kingdom for the first time in 2023 was a landmark event with respect to regulation of AI. The main objective of the summit was to address the risks and safe development of advanced AI systems, especially frontier models like generative AI in the larger context of AI governance. The policy recommendation and deliberations of complementary initiatives such as GPAI, AI for Good and UNESCO AI were feeders to this major global summit. At this summit, most advanced nations such as US, UK, China, India, and the EU more or less agreed towards a road map, which is defined in Bletchley Declaration, a global agreement by national governments towards regulation and human oversight of AI. Signed by 28 nations, this Bletchley Declaration affirms that AI should be designed, developed, deployed, and used in a manner that is safe, human-centric, trustworthy and responsible. A subsequent AI safety summit in Seoul in May 2024 and AI action summit in Paris in February 2025 reaffirmed these concerns. The Seoul summit advocated the establishment of multi-stakeholder safety institutes and testing frameworks to address concerns with respect to AI governance. The Paris summit saw 100 countries participate and sign the declaration on promotion of inclusive and sustainable AI. This summit focused on global coordination, policy alignment, inclusive governance, and balancing innovation with regulation.

Some of the guiding commitments of the Bletchley declaration are as follows:

• Shared understanding of AI risks including General-purpose AImodels also called Frontier of AI especially in areas such as biotechnology, cyber security applications and misinformation.
• International cooperation on AI safety research, standards and policies
• Risk mitigation and safety frameworks
• Scientific and evidence-based policies across countries to ensure safety while recognizing that approaches may differ based on national circumstances and applicable legal frameworks.

AI Impact Summit 2026

The AI Impact Summit refers to a set of international forums focused on the real-world impact of AI, especially its economic, societal, and developmental consequences.  How AI affects economies, jobs, governance, and society, and how to maximize benefits while minimizing risks……

 The first AI Impact Summit 2026 hosted by India, marked a significant milestone in global AI dialogue, especially as one of the first large-scale AI summits held in the global south. This summit saw participation from 100+ countries and 20+ international organizations as well as the major tech giants in the AI space. This included foundation model companies (OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepMind), big tech platforms (Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta), infrastructure leaders (NVIDIA) and emerging ecosystem players (Indian startups working on sovereign AI and home-grown LLMs).  At the AI Impact Summit 2026, the “7 Chakras framework” was used as a conceptual model to organize discussions and actionable policy directions around AI. These chakras represent key pillars of AI development and impact as follows:

• Human capital
• Inclusion
• Innovation
• Governance
• Safety & Trust
• Economic development
• Sustainability

While realizing that AI is a growth engine for economic transformation, this framework and summit provided a structured roadmap for countries to develop AI ecosystems while balancing innovation, inclusion, and safety. Other outcomes included a strong push for inclusive AI with enhanced access for developing nations in the global south, focus on digital infrastructure for public good, enhanced global and multistakeholder collaboration and workforce transformation.

India’s Approach in AI Governance

India is no doubt emerging as a global leader in AI governance and regulation. India’s approach has been pragmatic and non-aggressive as also veering towards combining innovation, inclusion, and ethical oversight without the risk of overregulation. It is a middle path akin to our non-alignment approach in geopolitics. Distinctly stakeholder-centric as opposed to state-focused approach of China or strict rights approach like Europe or market-focused like USA.  India has been an active participant of various intergovernmental and supranational forums engaged in AI regulation and governance from their inception. India chaired the GPAI in 2024 and hosted the 2023 edition of the GPAI summit at New Delhi.

The successful conduct of the AI Impact Summit 2026 reaffirms India arriving at the high table of AI governance and regulation. Of course, there remains a lot to be done. An overarching, binding and comprehensive AI act under the ambit of the Digital India act is needed which subsumes multiple laws such as Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023; IT Rules, 2021 (platform accountability), sectoral frameworks, and AI governance guidelines.

In highly regulated environments, we translate needs, manage change, and make sure nothing goes wrong by sitting between business, operations, compliance, and technology. Although many banking operations have been automated, the BA position has remained primarily manual, time-consuming, and document intensive.

That is now shifting.

Business analysts’ work is being subtly transformed by generative AI (GenAI), which enhances their effect, speed, and ability to think. GenAI is no longer an experiment in 2026. For BAs working in banking and financial services, it is turning into a useful co-pilot.

My set of quick observations:-

1. Two companies – Gabriel India Limited and Lumax World came as surpise to me while performing the analysis. You can yourself see that these two firms are fighting weight above the belt. While they are small from a market cap standpoint, they are investing significantly in R&D and trying to win the innovation and Industry 4.0 race

2. JBM Group, Motherson Group and Uno Minda meet expectations and seem to be on solid track to achieve their designated Industry 4.0 targets. Bosch India has strong potential to up their post manufacturing Industry 4.0 capabilities. With Motherson building its own tech services firm, the developments are expected to be fast there..

3. Shriram Pistons & Rings Ltd. is another firm which is looking very promising to me. Their current capabilities are limited but they have clear laid out push on Industry 4.0 in certain post-manufacturing segments

4. Not so happy with the developments at Bharat Forge Ltd. My independent analysis eye might have missed some developments and I can own up for that but current analysis suggest their approach is lack-lusture in both pre and post manufacturing setup

5. Exide Group is clear top-performer in post-manufacturing Industry 4.0 capabilities

6. Schaeffler India is undergoing strong developments leveraging their in-house capabilities. I hope to see more developments in both pre and post manufacturing capabilities in coming 3 years…

7. Interesting to see all these players leveraging both in-house engineering and IT outsourcing partners.

The Gap Between Investment and Reality

Over the past few years, I’ve had countless conversations with manufacturing leaders about digital transformation. Almost all of them have invested, sometimes heavily, in systems meant to improve visibility, efficiency, and control. ERP upgrades, BI dashboards, machine connectivity, quality systems – on paper, everything is there. And yet, when you step onto the shop floor, a different reality often emerges.

Despite all the technology in place, production is still managed across multiple disconnected systems. Teams are still bridging gaps manually, and in many cases, the cost and complexity of maintaining these environments continues to grow without delivering measurable impact on the shop floor. So the question is not whether manufacturers are investing in digitalization. The real question is why so many are still struggling to translate that investment into operational results.

The Real Challenge Isn’t Data – It’s Fragmentation

One pattern I see again and again is fragmentation. Over time, different systems are implemented to address specific needs. There is one system for production processes and OEE, another for quality, separate tools for maintenance, digital forms or EBR, energy monitoring, material handling and weighing, and work-in-progress tracking. Individually, many of these systems function well. But because they operate separately, manufacturers struggle to get a truly unified, real-time view of what is happening on the shop floor.

Instead of having one clear picture, information is scattered across systems. Insights are not readily available and require manual analysis, cross-checking data, and time-consuming investigation. As a result, by the time issues are fully understood, the opportunity to respond in real time is often lost. This makes continuous improvement significantly more difficult, and in some cases, nearly impossible to sustain. What’s missing is not data. It is continuity.

What Closed-Loop Manufacturing Really Means

This is where the concept of closed-loop manufacturing becomes critical, and also where it is often misunderstood. Closed loop is not just about collecting data, analyzing it, and taking action. At its core, it is about managing the entire production lifecycle within one continuous system where all processes are inherently connected. Production, quality, maintenance, materials, energy, and work in progress are not managed as separate domains, but as part of one operational flow.

When everything operates within a single environment, there is no need to connect the dots between systems because the dots are already connected. There are no gaps between planning and execution, no dependency on fragile integrations, and no disconnect between what is happening on the shop floor and what the organization sees.

What This Looks Like in the Real World

In one of the manufacturing companies we worked with, the situation was very typical. They had multiple systems in place covering quality, maintenance, and reporting, alongside manual processes used to manage production itself. From a management perspective, it seemed like everything was covered. But on the shop floor, operators were duplicating data, issues were identified too late, coordination between teams relied heavily on manual communication, and traceability required significant effort to reconstruct.

The problem was not a lack of tools. It was the absence of a unified operational structure. Once they moved to a closed-loop MES approach, production, quality, and maintenance became part of the same continuous flow. Data moved naturally across processes, everyone worked from the same real-time picture, and traceability became an inherent part of the operation rather than something that had to be built after the fact. The most significant change was not better visibility, but a fundamental shift in control and consistency.

What I am seeing today is a shift in how leading manufacturers think. There is less focus on adding more tools and more focus on simplifying and structuring operations. Closed-loop MES is becoming the foundation, and AI is becoming the layer that unlocks its full potential. Together, they are redefining what operational excellence looks like in modern manufacturing.

Final Thoughts

Digital transformation does not fail because of a lack of technology. It fails when technology does not reflect how production actually works. The manufacturers who are moving forward are those who stop layering systems and start building environments where everything works as one. That is where real impact begins.

The oceans have always been central to India’s destiny. From the ancient docks of Lothal and the spice routes of Kerala to the bustling container terminals of Mundra and JNPT, the sea has shaped our culture, commerce, and civilization. Today, as the world speaks of the “Blue Economy,” India is rediscovering an eternal truth: our prosperity and resilience are inextricably linked to the health of our oceans.

This book, Blue Bharat: India’s Voyage to a Resilient Ocean Economy, is the culmination of a journey that began with a series of reflections in Sagar Sandesh. Over time, these reflections evolved into more than one hundred essays that explored various facets of the Blue Economy, including fisheries, ports, offshore energy, marine biodiversity, coastal resilience, finance, diplomacy, and community livelihoods. Each article sought to ask a simple but profound question: how can India harness the potential of its seas without compromising their sanctity?

The idea of “Blue Bharat” is not just about economics. It is about weaving sustainability into our national narrative, ensuring that development uplifts coastal communities, protects marine ecosystems, and secures India’s rightful place in the emerging ocean order. This book is the culmination of a decade of sustained study and fieldwork on the Blue Economy-its concepts, policy frameworks, and on-the-ground projects across the globe.
Drawing on research, advisory engagements, and dialogues with practitioners, it brings together a diverse set of case studies from countries that are pioneering ocean-centric development. The aim is to distill what works, where the gaps remain, and how these lessons can guide scalable, resilient, and inclusive blue initiatives for the decade ahead.

As India marches towards its centenary of independence in 2047, the Blue Economy will be a cornerstone of Viksit Bharat. The policies we craft today, the investments we make, and the cultural values we embed in our ocean governance will determine not only our maritime future but also the well-being of future generations.

For thirty centuries, India stood at the very heart of global maritime commerce. From Lothal’s dockyards to the Cholas’ overseas expeditions, from the shipyards of Bombay that built warships for the Royal Navy to the fishermen of today who form the backbone of our coastal economy, the ocean has always been India’s destiny.

However, we often forget this. Colonization, industrial disruption, and policy neglect obscured our maritime legacy. The Blue Economy is not just an emerging global idea; it is a rediscovery of India’s own heritage, reimagined for sustainability and equity. This book, Blue Bharat, is my attempt to weave that past with the present, and to envision an ocean future where India leads not by exploitation, but by stewardship.

This book brings together ideas, policies, case studies, and experiences that I have written, witnessed, and lived. It is both a call to action and a reflection of hope. A call for India to embrace innovation, inclusivity, and international cooperation in shaping its Blue Economy, and a hope that Blue Bharat will stand as a model of balance, where prosperity and sustainability sail hand in hand.

When I began writing Blue Bharat, I wanted a precise map, not just a manifesto. Recent work, led by the MoES (Ministry of Environment and Science) and partners, provides a map of policy anchors, MSP pilots, investment frontiers, and replicable models from Odisha to the Andaman Islands. If we now match this architecture with disciplined delivery, coordinated institutions, investable pipelines, and community ownership, India can lead a just, innovative ocean economy well before 2047. This book is my small contribution to that shared voyage.

As I listened to the Prime Minister’s call of “Samudra se Samriddhi,” I heard more than a slogan -I heard a framework for Blue Bharat. His emphasis on port-led development, deeper harbours, and more innovative last-mile logistics directly reinforces this book’s central thesis: India’s resilience and growth will ride on ocean arteries. The message is clear -coastal shipping, inland-waterway linkages, shipbuilding, and maritime services must work as a unified system, lowering logistics costs, accelerating exports, and creating dignified livelihoods from boatyards to backwaters. That vision extends beyond complex infrastructure to climate-ready ports, cleaner fuels, digital maritime corridors, and a skilled coastal workforce, precisely the building blocks of a resilient voyage for India.

Blue Bharat takes that cue and turns it into a practitioner’s playbook. If “sea to prosperity” is our compass, then our course is to align policy with projects: coastal freight corridors that decongest highways, green bunkering and hydrogen pilots at major ports, safer fisheries with cold-chain value addition, ocean-energy demonstrators, and biotech-led blue ventures that respect marine ecology. The Prime Minister’s speech, read in this light, is not a distant promise but an operating manual, urging us to stitch together river-sea synergies, insure against climate shocks, and convert maritime geography into national competitiveness. This preface, therefore, is both acknowledgement and intent: Blue Bharat will help translate that call into actionable cases, resilient institutions, and measurable gains for India’s ocean economy.

I dedicate this work to the seafarers, fishers, scientists, policymakers, and communities who live by the sea, work with the sea, and protect the sea. Their voices, struggles, and resilience are the actual anchors of India’s ocean story.

I believe that this voyage of Blue Bharat is just beginning. The tides are with us, and if we navigate wisely, India’s oceans will not only secure our national growth but also make a meaningful contribution to global sustainability.

IT WILL INCREASE FROM THE CURRENT 17,000 M² TO 60,000 M² BY THE END OF THE YEAR

The Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, accompanied by the Spanish Government’s Delegate in Catalonia, Carlos Prieto, the Executive President of the Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona (CZFB), Pere Navarro, and the CZFB’s Director General, Blanca Sorigué, presided this morning over the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of DFactory Barcelona — a strategic project that will triple its total surface area and consolidate the Catalan capital as one of the leading international hubs of Industry 4.0.

With this expansion, DFactory Barcelona will increase from the current 17,000 m² to a total of 60,000 m², thanks to an estimated investment of around 50 million euros. The project foresees the creation of up to 1,500 direct jobs and around 5,000 indirect jobs, strengthening the economic, technological and social impact of the ecosystem in the Barcelona metropolitan area.  Inaugurated at the end of 2021, DFactory Barcelona is currently fully occupied, with 44 companies established in fields such as robotics, sensorics, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, 3D printing, virtual and augmented reality, blockchain, cybersecurity and nanotechnology. This collaborative environment has become the leading Industry 4.0 ecosystem in southern Europe and one of the major international benchmarks.

At present, the DFactory Barcelona ecosystem generates more than 300 direct jobs and 1,200 indirect jobs — figures that will multiply with the expansion. The companies based there have developed 63 patents and demonstrate a high level of specialisation: 45% of employees hold a university degree and 20% have a PhD. Moreover, 30.9% of the companies within the ecosystem are international, mainly from Europe, the United States and Asia.

During this event, the mayor explained that “today we are laying the first stone of a major project that creates new urban spaces and physically represents the city’s progress in a new area, with a new way of producing that is the way of the future: Industry 4.0,” and added that “we are a country and a metropolitan area that has made industry one of its hallmarks and a key driver of progress and transformation, and we are committed to an industry that is sustainable, compatible with urban life and, moreover, strongly focused on talent, added value, technology and innovation.”

Collboni highlighted that “all the efforts being made by Barcelona City Council, whether on its own or in cooperation with other public administrations or companies, are aimed at guaranteeing the right to stay in Barcelona, because there is affordable housing and because there are spaces of economic opportunity to work in the city.” Finally, he stressed that “at a time when we receive daily news about war and its impact on the economy due to some irresponsible leaders who govern the world, at the local level, those of us who work to guarantee the future of the people in our cities around the world do the exact opposite: not only defending and calling for peace, but also generating projects for prosperity and projects for the future so that people can live better and earn a better living.”

Pere Navarro, Executive President of the CZFB, explained that “the laying of the foundation stone for Phase 2 of DFactory Barcelona symbolizes a decisive step in the industrial transformation of the Zona Franca. We are building a strategic project, unique in the world, that continues to grow in order to consolidate Barcelona as a benchmark for the new industry. Today, 44 technology companies have already committed to this ecosystem, turning DFactory into one of the most important Industry 4.0 hubs in Europe, where talent, technology, and business are connected, and where new projects and partnerships are created.” He added: “At the Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona, we work to create the conditions that make industrial innovation possible, generating spaces and ecosystems where companies can grow, collaborate, and adapt to the challenges of the future. This expansion is key to continuing to drive a model that transforms an industrial estate into a District 4.0 and positions Barcelona at the forefront of industrial innovation”.

For her part, Blanca Sorigué, Director General of the CZFB, stated that ‘at DFactory we provide the runway for companies to innovate, connecting different worlds through public–private collaboration. Here, we make it possible for companies, technology, talent, universities and institutions to work together so that innovation truly happens. With this expansion, we will triple DFactory’s space and consolidate it as one of Europe’s major technological industrial ecosystems.’

Finally, the Government Delegate in Catalonia, Carlos Prieto, stated during his speech that “the expansion of DFactory Barcelona is very good news for Barcelona, for Catalonia, and for Spain as a whole, because it shows that our industry is not only still alive, but is evolving, innovating, and generating new opportunities. This project transforms a space historically linked to industrial production into a benchmark for Industry 4.0, capable of attracting investment, talent, and highly qualified employment. From the Government of Spain, we support and promote initiatives like this, which connect economic progress, technology, and the future. It is evident that our country is growing, and this is reflected in proposals like this.”

A strategic expansion serving the new economy

The expansion of DFactory Barcelona initially includes the construction of four new buildings. One of the highlights is the Cub building, covering an area of 1,100 m² and conceived as a space for major international events related to Industry 4.0 and the new economy, as well as for public events and community activities. In addition, two further buildings will be constructed, featuring a ground floor dedicated to manufacturing and three upper floors housing laboratories, technology centres and offices. These new spaces will help attract highly innovative companies and foster the creation of synergies, joint projects and new lines of applied research.

The project also includes a services building with dining areas and other facilities, reinforcing the concept of an integrated industrial campus designed to attract both national and international talent. About the Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona

The Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona is a public company that acts as a driver of technological and industrial development by supporting companies in their transition towards the digital era, because of CZFB’s strategic vision to lead Industry 4.0.

It promotes District 4.0 by driving the transformation of Industry 4.0 from the DFactory Barcelona technological ecosystem, champions innovation through the 3D Incubator and the Logistics 4.0 Incubator and connects the new economy and its key socioeconomic sectors.
